Acquiring appropriate knowledge and skills to adapt to climate change is vital for our climate-resilience. Economies are transforming towards more climate-resilient ‘green jobs’. The ILO estimates up to 14.2 million net green jobs in Asia and the Pacific by 2030, if appropriate investments and policies are realized.

Women are underrepresented in key sectors of the green economy, for example, renewable energy, green infrastructure, sustainable transport, management of water, waste and land. Women also tend to work in lower-end, vulnerable jobs with less pay as compared to men.

ASPBAE, Azad and ESCAP are pleased to co-organize this virtual side-event to explore together how women from marginalized communities in Asia and the Pacific can be empowered with knowledge and skills to fully participate and contribute to a climateresilient green economy. The issue is at the cross-section of HLPF-focus SDGs 1, 13, and 17, and with SDG 4, 5, 8 and 10.

Key Questions and Outcomes

This side event will examine the following questions:

  1. What are the opportunities and barriers and for marginalized women in accessing skilling and non-traditional livelihood opportunities in the green economy?
  2. What are some successful policy and programmatic interventions that have empowered marginalized women to gain skilling and non-traditional livelihood opportunities in the green economy?
  3. How can partnerships between governments, industry, civil society organisations, and international and regional organizations be strengthened to increase the access of marginalized women to skilling and non-traditional livelihood opportunities in the green economy?
  4. How can regional and subregional cooperation support women’s economic empowerment in the green economy in Asia and the Pacific?

The discussion will draw on experiences of NGOs in the region shared in the panel. Participants will be invited to contribute questions and learnings from their own experiences and observations to deepen the collective reflection around the guiding questions. At the end of the session, some takeaway insights and recommendations will emerge for follow-up actions by participants and ESCAP at country or regional levels.
