Heads of State, ministers, senior policymakers and other key stakeholders are set to explore how digital innovation can more inclusively contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across multiple disciplines when they convene in Bangkok from 22 to 26 April at the 80th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (CS80).

Asia and the Pacific is uniquely placed to leverage digital technologies to overcome sustainable development challenges. Already, the region is recognized as a dynamic hub for digitally driven innovation fuelled by pioneering technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Digital Finance, GovTech and the Internet of Things. Yet to encourage further ingenuity and tap digital innovation to bolster the huge collective effort required to achieve the SDGs, the region needs a plan.

During the session, government and sectoral leaders will also participate in a series of high-level roundtables delving into the region’s socioeconomic outlook, technological advancements and digital inclusion as well as identifying opportunities to fully unleash the transformative potential of digital innovations. A Digital Innovations Fair at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok will further provide space to engage with a broad range of stakeholders showcasing inspiring innovations that are contributing to the region’s sustainable development.

For the first time, the Commission session will also be broadcast live globally via the UN Web TV channel, the official video platform of the United Nations.

Developing countries in Asia and the Pacific are finding it harder to increase public investments to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to higher public debt levels, government borrowing costs have risen with shorter loan maturities in recent years. The 2024 edition of the UN’s Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific examines how policymakers in the region and the international community can boost the availability of affordable and long-term financing for governments.

Among others, experts at the launch of the Survey will present key findings and further address:

  • How can Asia-Pacific economies weather near-term economic headwinds?
  • What is needed to increase the region’s tax collection potential and thus reduce borrowing costs?
  • What changes in the operations of donors, multilateral development banks and credit rating agencies can help boost long-term development financing?
  • How are demographic shifts, climate change and technological advancements changing the fiscal policymaking landscape?

NOTE TO EDITOR: Members of the media are invited to participate in the launch event and press briefing. Interviews with ESCAP experts and embargo copies of the report are also available upon request.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will convene the Seventh Asian and Pacific Population Conference (APPC) from 15 to 17 November 2023.

With 60 per cent of the world’s population living in Asia and the Pacific, the conference will serve as a crucial platform to delve into the intersection of population dynamics and sustainable development, discussing key demographic trends in the region and the required policy interventions to capitalize on these opportunities.

In the wake of significant strides and progress over the past decades - including with regard to health, poverty eradication, sanitation, nutrition and education - the region now stands at a crossroads. Emerging demographic trends, such as population ageing, low fertility and increased migration, coupled with the challenges of socio-economic inequalities and vulnerabilities, and the impact of climate change, disasters, conflicts, the COVID-19 pandemic and digital transformation increase the need for countries to take urgent action.

The conference will also provide an opportunity to review the implementation of the Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development in the region.

NOTE TO EDITOR: Members of the media are invited to attend in-person or via the online webcast. A media engagement session with ESCAP and UNFPA principals will be held on 15 November at 1100 – 1130hrs.

Amidst weak economic growth prospects, high inflation and elevated interest rates, a UN regional gathering is bringing ministers, policymakers and experts to assess the effects of investments in the Sustainable Development Goals and reiterate the need to scale up the effort for climate action to meet the global commitments on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is at its midway point this year.

Convening from 1 to 3 November 2023 in Bangkok, the Fourth Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development is slated to explore a new approach to assessing the effects of investment in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on public debt sustainability. The Committee is also expected to hear feedback on 10 proposed principles for action in sustainable finance, which encourages Governments, regulators and financial institutions to leverage their financial resources for net zero transition.

Keynote speakers are scheduled to address additional topics such as the role of multilateral development banks as catalysts for net zero transition by strengthening climate finance partnerships and investment in energy transition projects and green technologies.
